The Scary Movie Reboot Is a Complete Disaster | Honest Review

Is Scary Movie (2026) the worst entry in the franchise? My partner and I sat down expecting outrageous parody comedy, but instead we got a movie packed with dated internet jokes, Gen Z slang, cringe-worthy gags, and references that never go anywhere. From the Sinners church parody to Terrifier, Scream (2022), and Scream VI (2023) callbacks, almost every joke feels like a missed opportunity. In this review, I break down why the Wayans' return wasn't enough to save the film, why the characters never become memorable, and why the edgy humor that made the original Scary Movie movies classics is completely missing. If you're wondering whether this reboot is worth watching or if you should just revisit the originals, here's my honest take.

Scary Movie (2026) Review – The Franchise Forgot What Made It Funny

My partner and I recently watched the new Scary Movie, and I'm just going to say it—I’m glad we didn't pay to see it. This has to be the most unfunny movie in the entire franchise.

The trailer itself was already raising red flags, and the opening scene didn't do much to change my mind. For a brief second, I actually thought that opening gag was going to be the movie, so I breathed a sigh of relief when it turned out to be a fake-out. Unfortunately, that relief didn't last long.

From that point on, the movie becomes a collection of disconnected skits that rarely land. Instead of delivering clever satire or memorable parody, it throws random jokes at the audience and hopes something sticks. Most of the time, the humor comes off as awkward, forced, and downright cringe-worthy.

Take the church scene with Ray, for example. It's obviously trying to parody Sinners, complete with the over-the-top "I'm not gay anymore" style references, but instead of being hilarious, it just feels uncomfortable and painfully unfunny. The entire movie follows that same formula—reference something popular, exaggerate it for a minute, and then immediately move on before there's any real payoff.

What makes the movie even more disappointing is that it has plenty of source material to work with but wastes almost every opportunity. It throws in parodies of Terrifier, Scream (2022), Scream VI (2023), and even internet personalities like Andrew Caldwell, yet none of them leave a lasting impression. The film seems to believe that simply recreating a recognizable scene or showing a familiar face is enough to earn a laugh, but it never commits to the joke long enough for it to actually become funny.

The Sinners parody had genuine potential, and there were moments where it looked like the movie was about to deliver a clever twist, but instead it immediately abandoned the idea for another random gag. The same thing happens with the Terrifier and Scream references—they're introduced, acknowledged, and then forgotten before anything memorable happens. There's no escalation, no payoff, and no creativity behind them.

The older Scary Movie films understood that a parody isn't just about copying iconic scenes—it's about taking those scenes and pushing them into complete absurdity until they're hilarious. This movie never gets there. It relies almost entirely on recognition, expecting audiences to laugh because they know the reference instead of giving them an actual joke. The result is a film packed with callbacks and pop culture nods that somehow manages to feel empty, forgettable, and surprisingly lifeless.

The plot itself is all over the place. It jumps from one gag to another with no real direction, relying on dated memes, Gen Z slang, social media jokes, AI references, and internet culture that already feels old. Even with the return of the Wayans brothers, the comedy feels flat. The jokes rarely land, the characters are exaggerated caricatures instead of memorable personalities, and almost every scene overstays its welcome.

One of the biggest problems is that the movie never gives its characters anything significant to do. They're simply vehicles to move from one reference to the next. Instead of building memorable parody versions of horror icons or developing recurring jokes, every character exists for a quick punchline before disappearing into the background. Nothing evolves, nothing builds, and nothing pays off.

Scary movies were dumb and just a comedic parody movie, but at least their jokes landed I feel like they could of worked more on the landing of the jokes, but all in all, I just thought it could’ve been edgy like they said it was going to be like the other ones as that is what made them funny…. I remember watching the older movies, and part of what made them funny was the edgy, dark humor, like in the first one when the friends were all in the car. Boddy was trying to get some top from Cindy, but she said no, but the small dick jock stepped on her head, and she started slurping on that damn thing with spit and everything, with a dick in her throat, or the Charlie Sheen scene with Michael Jackson in Scary Movie 3, etc. But it’s just another woke, Gen Z, non-offensive move ever out of all of them…

This newest entry feels like it's constantly holding back. Instead of embracing the dark, edgy humor that made the franchise stand out, it plays it safe while chasing current internet trends and Gen Z references. It feels sanitized, predictable, and desperate to stay relevant rather than simply trying to be funny.

There were maybe one or two moments that earned a small chuckle, but for the most part, I spent the entire runtime waiting for something memorable to happen. Every setup feels like it could lead somewhere hilarious before immediately collapsing into another random gag or pop culture reference.

For a franchise that built its reputation on fearless parody, this installment feels surprisingly tame. It has recognizable faces, familiar horror references, and plenty of opportunities to create iconic moments, but it never capitalizes on any of them.

Maybe some people will enjoy this style of humor, and that's perfectly fine. Comedy is subjective. But for me, this wasn't just the weakest Scary Movie—it was one of the most disappointing comedy films I've seen in a long time.

At this point, I'm honestly not even surprised anymore.

And after watching this? I don't even know if I have faith left for GTA 6.

Final Rating: 2/10

Pros

* A few parody concepts show brief flashes of potential.

* Nostalgia from seeing familiar faces return.

* One or two scenes manage to get a small chuckle.

Cons

* Jokes rarely land.

* Weak, directionless plot.

* Cringe-worthy humor that mistakes references for comedy.

* Relies heavily on Gen Z slang and internet trends.

* Wastes parody opportunities from Terrifier, Scream (2022), Scream VI (2023), and Sinners.

* Characters never develop into memorable comedic personalities.

* Lacks the edgy, unapologetic humor that made the original films classics.

If you're looking for a genuinely funny horror parody, you're probably better off revisiting the original Scary Movie movies instead of sitting through this one.
